A DDW file is a theme used by WinDynamicDesktop, an app that changes your desktop wallpaper based on the time of day at your location. It is a Zip-compressed archive that contains desktop wallpaper .JPG images, and a .JSON file storing theme metadata. WinDynamicDesktop users load DDW files in the software to display images on their desktop at different times throughout the day (e.g., sunrise, day, sunset, and night).

WinDynamicDesktop provides the same functionality as the Dynamic Desktop feature in macOS Mojave. You can choose a theme in the app and set your location, and then the app will run in the background, changing your wallpaper at different times during the day.
You can choose from a theme included with WinDynamicDesktop or download one from the app's webpage of themes. You can also create a custom DDW theme to display.
For example, you can create a theme from a single image or a set of images with the online WinDynamicDesktop .ddw Theme Creator. It can also convert .HEIC images to .DDW themes.

Opening a DDW file as a Zip archive
Since DDW files are .ZIP archives, you can also open them with a Zip compression utility, such as Microsoft File Explorer (Windows) or Apple Archive Utility (macOS), then extract their contents. You may need to rename the .ddw file extension to .zip before extracting it with a Zip utility.
