An MDB file is a database used by several Avid video editing and finishing software products, such as Media Composer and the discontinued Avid Xpress. It contains indexed information about media assets utilized within a video editing project. MDB files act as a cache that tracks and manages references to video, audio, and other project resources, keeping them up to date.

Avid software generates MDB files automatically in the folders containing media assets alongside other Avid media management files, such as .PMR files. If you delete an MDB file, the software will automatically rebuild it, repopulating the database with the latest asset information. This process helps maintain the integrity and organization of media files within a project.

MDB files are not intended to be opened or edited manually. Instead, Avid applications, such as Media Composer and the discontinued Avid Xpress, create and load them automatically to index media and speed up access to video and audio files.
