United States Geological Survey (USGS) developed the DLG format. Depending on the standard used, DLG (Digital Line Graph) files may store data in binary and text formats:
- DLG-3 files (older standard) are typically stored in ASCII text format, making them human-readable and easier to edit manually.
- DLG-F files (modern standard) use a binary format, which is more compact and efficient for processing but not easily readable without specialized GIS software.

You can open DLG files with various Safe Software FME Desktop, ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop, and TatukGIS Viewer in Windows. For example, you can open a DLG file with FME Desktop in a workspace by clicking Add Reader (or go to Readers → Add Reader) and then selecting "USGS Digital Line Graph (DLG)" in the Format field.
