FoxPro Memo Backup

A TBK file is a backup of a database table memo created by Microsoft Visual FoxPro, a now-discontinued database management program for Windows. It contains an exact copy of the memo field data stored in an .FPT file for a FoxPro database table (.DBF file) to protect against data loss or corruption.

詳細情報

Memo fields in Visual FoxPro store binary data and text notes too large to be included in the corresponding database table. Instead of storing the information directly, the DBF table references entries in the FPT file, which contain the full content of memo fields, such as comments, notes, or other unstructured text data.

Visual FoxPro generates TBK files during database maintenance or as part of manual or automated backup processes to ensure that the information in the FPT files is not lost. The software also stores corresponding backups of the table structure or other data in a .BAK file. The software generates the TBK and BAK files in the same directory as the FPT and DBF files.

注: The last version of Visual FoxPro was 9.0, which Microsoft published in 2007.

TBKファイルの開き方

You can open TBK files with the discontinued Microsoft Visual FoxPro in Windows. To restore information from a TBK backup file, delete or rename the FPT file with the same name, then rename the .tbk extension with the .fpt file extension.

dBASE Database Text Backup

A TBK file is a backup of a database text (.DBT) file created by dBASE database-managing software and IDE. It contains HTML-formatted text for memo fields in a database (.DBF or .DB2 file). When a user modifies the structure of a database that points to a DBT file storing memo text, dBASE automatically creates the TBK file to back up and restore the DBT file if it becomes corrupt.

詳細情報

dBASE is a Windows program that offers various database-related capabilities, including database management and tools for building and compiling programs. While dBASE databases can store a large amount of data, they may point to external files that separately store memo information to reduce their size.

For example, a DBF database that contains memo fields points to the location of a DBT file that stores the information for the memo fields. When dBASE loads the database, the software also loads the memo text from the DBT file.

If you modify the structure of a DBF or DB2 file via the MODIFY STRUCTURE command, dBASE automatically creates a backup file of the database (saves it as a .DBK file) and original memo text in the DBT file and saves it with the .tbk file extension. dBASE then creates a new table with the .dbf file extension and a new memo text file with the .dbt file extension to store the modified table structure and related memo text. After you finish adjusting the structure, dBASE moves the content from the TBK backup file to the new DBT database file and removes the TBK file.

注: dBASE stands for "dataBased Intelligence."

TBKファイルの開き方

You can open a TBK file with dBASE in Windows. Typically, you will not open TBK files since the program automatically creates, loads, and removes TBK files.

You can also open TBK files with a plain text or source code editor. Remember, that incorrectly editing the TBK file may corrupt it.
