Programmers typically use LIS files when working in the VAX/VMS environment, a legacy operating system developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). They may use a VAX compiler, which generates LIS files, or a compiler in OpenVMS, the successor to VAX/VMS that retains compatibility with many of its file formats and utilities.
REMARQUE: LIS files generated by a compiler bear the same name as the related source code file.
