What is a LIS file?
A LIS file is a report or output file generated by a Structured Query Reporting (SQR) program. It uses SQL statements to run queries on databases and create reports.
More Information
LIS data may be formatted in PCL (Printer Control Language). PCL is a page-description language developed by Hewlett-Packard that describes the layout of the text and graphics in a document.

A LIS file may also be a program listing file generated during the compilation process of VAX/VMS programs. It contains the source code of the program being compiled, with each line numbered to help users quickly reference them. If the compiler detects syntax errors during the compilation, the compiler adds them to the source code in the file, allowing developers to identify and address issues directly within the context of the program code.
More Information
Programmers typically use LIS files when working in the VAX/VMS environment, a legacy operating system developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). They may use a VAX compiler, which generates LIS files, or a compiler in OpenVMS, the successor to VAX/VMS that retains compatibility with many of its file formats and utilities.
NOTE: LIS files generated by a compiler bear the same name as the related source code file.
How to open a LIS file
You can open LIS files with Software Resource International CHARON-VAX in Windows. For example, you can view an LIS file by typing TYPE example.lis in the CHARON-VAX command-line tool or edit a file by typing EDIT example.lis.
Since LIS files store plain text, you can also open and view them with a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (bundled with Windows) and Apple TextEdit (bundled with macOS).
