What is a VOI file?
A VOI file is a collection of Volumes of Interest (VOIs), which define three-dimensional regions of interest (ROIs) on brain scans, such as MRI or PET images. It is created by BrainMaker, a medical imaging program, and is saved and managed through the VOIGroup Manager, a component within BrainMaker that allows researchers and clinicians to organize and analyze sets of VOIs.
More Information
Medical researchers, neuroscientists, and healthcare professionals working with advanced imaging data are the primary users of VOI files. The purpose of a VOI file is to make it easier to study specific brain regions by grouping them for comparison, measurement, or visualization.
For example, a researcher might create VOIs around areas affected by a neurological disorder to track changes across multiple scans. Saving these regions in a VOI file allows consistent analysis across different imaging sessions.
NOTE: NeuroInfo Lite replaced BrainMaker, and does not support VOI files.
How to open a VOI file
You can open VOI files with The MathWorks MATLAB in Windows. Since VOI files created by BrainMaker store plain text, you can also open them with a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad or Apple TextEdit.

A VOI file may also be an audio file created by discontinued Voyetra music software, a set of programs used in the 1990s for composing and playing music on personal computers. It stores short sound clips or voice samples that Voyetra applications can play. Since VOI files are saved in a proprietary format and are now obsolete, modern audio programs cannot open or play these files.
More Information
Musicians, hobbyists, and early computer audio enthusiasts working with Voyetra’s products are the primary users of VOI files. Now, users will likely only encounter VOI files in old project archives or software collections.
How to open a VOI file
You can open VOI files with WinDat in Windows. However, WinDat is no longer developed.
