What is an SME file?

An SME file is a backup file created by Samsung backup programs, such as Kies and Smart Switch. It stores an archive of backup data for your mobile phone, which includes short text (SMS) messages and memos. SME files are similar to .SBU backup files.

Samsung Kies software comes bundled with Samsung phones. The SME file can be viewed in Kies and imported into a Samsung mobile device that is supported by the Kies application. Samsung Smart Switch is also available to restore and backup data in Samsung mobile phones. Smart Switch is available for Windows, macOS, and Android.

What is an SME file?

Encrypted file created by Smart Soft SmartEncryptor, a file and folder encryption and decryption application; contains a secured file that can only be viewed when decrypted in SmartEncryptor by entering the password.

To encrypt your file, therefore replacing the current extension with the SME extension, select the "Encrypt" tab, click Add Files, navigate to your file, click OK, enter and confirm the password you want for your SME file, and click Encrypt, choose the save location, name the file, and click Save.

To decrypt your SME file, select the "Decrypt" tab, click Browse, navigate to your file, click Open, enter your password, select a destination folder for the decrypted file, and click OK.

NOTE: Smart Soft SmartEncryptor is no longer available for download.
