What is an SMEM file?
An SMEM file is a text message backup file created by Samsung Smart Switch, a backup app for Samsung Galaxy phones. It contains an encrypted copy of a user's Samsung Messages history. SMEM files are meant to be restored to a Galaxy phone using Smart Switch.
Samsung Smart Switch is the official backup app used to transfer a user's messages, contacts, notes, call history, settings, and other data from one Samsung Galaxy to another. Each backup Smart Switch creates is comprised of several encrypted files, each of which contains a portion of the user's data. SMEM files contain a user's Samsung Messages history.
Because SMEM files are encrypted, you cannot simply open them to read or retrieve your text messages. Instead, you must transfer the file to a Samsung Galaxy phone using Samsung Smart Switch.
How to open an SMEM file
The best way to retrieve the text messages an SMEM file contains is to transfer the file to a Galaxy phone using Samsung Smart Switch (Android, Windows, Mac) as part of the normal Galaxy backup and restore process. After you do, the messages your SMEM file contains will appear in the Samsung Messages app.
