What is an SDM file?
An SDM file is an email message created by Sun Microsystems StarOffice Mail, an email client included with early versions of the StarOffice office suite. It stores the complete contents of an email message, including the text, sender and recipient information, subject line, and any attachments.
More Information
StarOffice Mail was part of the broader StarOffice suite, which included tools for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and more. The mail client allowed users to send, receive, and organize email directly within the suite. When users composed or received messages, the email client saved emails as SDM files.
Each SDM file contains a complete record of a single email, including metadata such as sender, recipient, date, and subject. Any file attachments were embedded within the same file, making SDM files helpful in archiving or sharing individual messages.
StarOffice Mail and the SDM format became obsolete after Sun Microsystems acquired StarDivision in 1999 and transitioned the suite to OpenOffice.org. Sun Microsystems discontinued the mail client during this transition, and support for SDM files ceased. As a result, SDM files are now rare.
How to open an SDM file
You can open SDM files with Sun Microsystems StarOffice Mail. However, the software is discontinued.

An SDM file may also be a TIBCO Statistica workspace. It contains data, nodes, and connections that data analysts use to analyze and interpret data. By default, SDM files do not contain the results of an analysis.
More Information
TIBCO Statistica is an analytics suite that data analysts use to analyze data and create predictive models. As they begin analyzing data, analysts drag and drop datasets and processes, referred to as nodes, into a Statistica workspace. Typically, analysts annotate nodes as they add them to explain each node's function. Analysts then connect their nodes and run the composite process they've created to generate an analysis.
An SDM file stores the data, processes, connections, and annotations an analyst has assembled in a Statistica workspace. It does not, however, typically contain the results of an analyst's analysis. So, while analysts can use SDM files to share datasets and processes, each analyst must run the process an SDM file contains themselves to view the process's results.
How to open an SDM file
You can open an SDM file (TIBCO Statistica Workspace) and run the processes it contains in TIBCO Statistica. To open an SDM file in Statistica, select File → Open → Workspace from the program's menu bar. To run the processes an SDM file contains, select Run All from the Workspace window.
