A REDIR file may also be a noteskin redirect file used by version 5 of StepMania, a multiplatform rhythm game. It contains settings that specify what image should be used in place of a previous default noteskin. StepMania 5 includes many REDIR files in its NoteSkins directory.

StepMania is a free Dance Dance Revolution clone available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Version 5 of the game uses REDIR files to point to updated .PNG images, which the game loads as noteskins (images that appear on-screen when users press a button in time to music).
While most players will never need to open or edit StepMania REDIR files, players who are having issues with game asset redirection or who want to mod StepMania may want to examine and edit the game's REDIR files.
NOTE: Modders may use REDIR files to redirect references to other game assets. For example, a REDIR file found in the Characters folder is likely used to mod a character.
How to open a REDIR file
You can open and edit a REDIR file with Microsoft Notepad (Windows), Apple TextEdit (Mac), or any other text editor. Keep in mind that doing so may cause StepMania 5 to function incorrectly.
