What is a PXM file?
A PXM file is an image file created by Pixelmator, an image-editing program for macOS and iOS. It contains an image edited in Pixelmator, as well as a record of that image's layers and adjustments. The PXM format was replaced by the .PXD format in Pixelmator Pro.
Pixelmator is a Mac- and iOS-only image editor that allows users to enhance or touch up photos, digitally draw and paint, and add text, shapes, and effects to images. Images created or edited in Pixelmator are saved as PXM files.
Each PXM file consists of one or more layers, which contain image elements. For example, a PXM file might contain a background image layer, a shape layer, and a text layer. Each of these layers can be edited individually. Users can continue to edit the layers a PXM file contains (and add additional layers) even after closing and re-opening the file.
How do I convert a PXM file to JPG, PNG, and other image formats?
How to open a PXM file
You can open a PXM file in Pixelmator Classic or Pixelmator for iOS. To open a PXM file in Pixelmator Classic, select File → Open... from the program's menu bar. Then, navigate to and open your PXM file.
You can also open a PXM file in Pixelmator Pro. However, if you save your PXM file in Pixelmator Pro, the program will convert the file to a PXD file.
