What is a PRTDOT file?
More Information
Dassault Systemes SolidWorks is a program that engineers use to create 3D models of industrial parts, including sheet metal, piping and tubing, molds, and plastic and cast parts. Those 3D models are saved as SLDPRT files.
If an engineer knows they'll want to reuse the document properties associated with an existing part, they can save those properties as a PRTDOT file. They can then select the PRTDOT file during the part creation process, to apply the properties it contains to their new part.
How do I create a new SolidWorks part template?
To create a new SolidWorks part template:
- Select File → New and create a new part.
- Modify the part's document properties as needed.
- Select File → Save As.
- In the Save as type: field, select Part Templates (*.prtdot).
- Name and save your PRTDOT file
SolidWorks will then save your PRTDOT file in the program's default template folder.
How to open a PRTDOT file
You can open a PRTDOT file in Dassault Systemes SolidWorks (Windows, Mac). To do so:
- Create a new SolidWorks part.
- When the New SolidWorks Document window appears, select the Templates tab.
- Select and open your PRTDOT file.
