What is a PP3 file?
A PP3 file is a settings file used by RawTherapee, a free photo editing program designed for processing RAW image files from digital cameras. It stores a list of adjustments in plain text that a user has applied to an image in RawTherapee, such as exposure, contrast, white balance, color correction, and sharpening. RawTherapee saves these adjustments separately from the image in a PP3 file that accompanies the image, allowing users to apply or reuse settings without altering the original photo.
More Information
PP3 files are helpful for photographers using RawTherapee who want a non-destructive editing workflow or need to apply the same settings to multiple images. RawTherapee users can also share the files with other users, allowing them to apply the same processing style to their photos.
When users edit a photo with RawTherapee, the software automatically creates a PP3 file to save their changes. This file is typically stored alongside the original image and uses the same filename but with the .pp3 extension applied. For example, a PP3 file for the example.CR3 image is named example.CR3.pp3. Additionally, users can open the image in RawTherapee later, and the program will automatically load the settings from the PP3 file so they can continue editing or export the image with their previous adjustments.
NOTE: PP3 files are similar to .SIDECAR and .NKSC sidecar files used by Blackmagic and Nikon.
How to open a PP3 file
You can open PP3 files with RawTherapee. To open a PP3 file, select the folder icon in the "Processing Profiles" section in the upper-right corner of the program.
Since PP3 files are saved in plain text, you can also open them with a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (Windows) or Apple TextEdit (macOS). You may need to rename the .pp3 file extension to .txt for the text editor to recognize and open it.
When opened in a text editor, you can modify the properties of the PP3 file. However, if you incorrectly modify the file, you may inadvertently corrupt the edits.
