What is an MTE file?
An MTE file is used by the discontinued MadTracker 2, a music tracker for Windows. It stores audio envelope data referenced by the software to modify the shape of a waveform over time, affecting aspects like volume, pitch, or filtering. MTE envelopes allowed users to create dynamic changes in their sounds, making them helpful to music producers and sound designers for shaping audio within MadTracker 2 projects.
More Information
An audio envelope is a way to shape the characteristics of a sound over time by controlling how a sound starts, develops, and fades through modifying parameters, such as volume, pitch, or filter frequency. In relation to MadTracker 2, MTE files help shape sound dynamics, making them useful for genres like chiptune, electronic music, and demoscene compositions.
Yannick Delwiche developed MadTracker 2, and it became a popular tracker-based DAW in the early 2000s. However, modern alternatives, such as Renoise and OpenMPT, have largely replaced it. Since MadTracker 2 is no longer actively developed, MTE files are obscure. Tracker enthusiasts who continue working with the software or revisiting older projects are likely the only users encountering MTE files.
How to open an MTE file
You can open MTE files with MadTracker 2 in Windows. However, the software is no longer developed.

More Information
You will most likely only encounter an Export Configuration MTE file if you are editing the metadata of audio files with Mp3tag. The program supports a variety of audio formats, including Advanced Audio Coding (.AAC), Audio Interchange File Format (.AIFF), Matroska (.MKA and .MKV), MPEG Layer 3 (.MP3), WAVE (.WAV), Ogg Vorbis (.OGG), and MPEG-4 (.MP4, .M4A, and .M4V).
Metadata is an important aspect of audio files because it stores information about the track, artist, genre, album art, lyrics, producer, and more for the file. This information is displayed by most audio players and is referenced for organizing the files. It is also essential for licensing music and providing proof of authorship.
You can save the configuration of export settings for tag data with Mp3tag by selecting File → Save configuration.... Mp3tag creates one or more MTE files storing the configuration and compresses it in a .ZIP archive.
To open and restore an export configuration in Mp3tag, extract the MTE files with a Zip compression utility to the following directory:
- Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Mp3tag
- Windows Vista - C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\Mp3tag
- Windows 7/8/8.1/10 - C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\Mp3tag
