What is an MPV file?

An MPV file contains raw video data encoded using the MPEG-2 codec. This "elementary stream" was likely output from a digital video recorder. Users can import MPV files into video editing and authoring programs to include them in an edited video.

More Information

Unlike .MPEG, .AVI, and .MP4 files, MPV files do not use a container format. However, you can still play them in video players that include the MPEG-2 codec. In this way, MPV files are similar to .M2V and .MPV2 files.

NOTE: MPV files are often paired with associated .MPA files, which contain corresponding audio.

How to open an MPV file

You can open an MPV file with VideoLAN VLC media player (multiplatform) or FFmpeg (multiplatform). You may be able to open the file in other common video players by changing its extension from .mpv to .mpeg.

How to convert an MPV file

You can use VideoLAN VLC media player or FFmpeg to convert MPV2 files to other video formats. For example, VLC can convert MPV2 files to the following formats:

  • .MP4 - MPEG-4 Video
  • .WEBM - WebM Video
