What is an LRLIBRARY file?
An LRLIBRARY file is a photo library created by the macOS version of Adobe Lightroom, a photo editing and organization app. It contains a copy of photos imported into a user's Lightroom library, as well as information used to organize those photos. Lightroom automatically creates an LRLIBRARY file, named Lightroom Library.lrlibrary, after installation. The file is stored in your Pictures directory.
More Information
Lightroom Library.lrlibrary contains a copy of photos you have imported into Adobe Lightroom. These photos are stored in the LRLIBRARY file's originals folder and organized by date taken.
Depending on your Lightroom Local Storage settings, your LRLIBRARY file may contain a copy of all the photos you've imported into Lightroom or only your most recent photos. You can view your Local Storage settings in Lightroom's Preferences menu, by selecting Local Storage.
Each LRLIBRARY file also includes multiple .MCAT files and other metadata files used to organize your Lightroom library.
NOTE: The Windows version of Lightroom stores its photo library in the Adobe/Lightroom CC/Data directory.
How to open an LRLIBRARY file
You can open an LRLIBRARY file in the macOS version of Adobe Lightroom. To do so, either install Lightroom and double-click the file, or right-click the file and select Open With → Adobe Lightroom.
You can also manually explore an LRLIBRARY file's contents, using Windows File Explorer or the macOS Finder. In Windows, LRLIBRARY files appear as directories, which you can open and examine in File Explorer. In macOS, LRLIBRARY files are macOS packages, which you can explore by right-clicking and selecting Show Package Contents.
