A HOT file may also be a game data file used by 4x4 Evolution, an off-road racing video game. It contains a record of a player's hot lap, which is their best lap on a specific racecourse. HOT files are used in 4 x 4 Evolution's Hot Lap mode, which allows players to race against a ghost completing their hot lap.
4x4 Evolution, which was originally released as 4x4 Evo, is notable for being of of the first console games to allow cross-platform online play. The game also released for Mac and Windows, allowing gamers to play 4x4 Evolution from their PCs.
The PC versions of 4x4 Evolution store records of players' best laps, commonly referred to as hot laps, in HOT files. 4x4 Evolution loads these files and uses them to show ghost racers in its Hot Lap mode, which racers use to help them improve their lap times.
