An FC file may also be a file that has been encrypted by Paradise ransomware, which is malware distributed by cybercriminals. It contains a file, such as a .JPG, .DOCX, .XLSX, .MP4, or .PDF file, that has been renamed and encrypted by the virus. FC files can be decrypted for free using a decryption tool developed by Emsisoft.

More Information

In 2019, some PC users reported that their computers had been infected by a new variant of Paradise ransomware, which encrypted their files and saved them with the .fc extension. The ransomware also created a ransom note named ---==%$$$OPEN_ME_UP$$$==---.txt, which encouraged users to contact the ransomware's creators via online chat and pay a ransom to decrypt their files.

However, because the anti-malware community has been dealing with variants of Paradise since 2017, they were able to quickly develop a decryption program that could decrypt and restore FC files. In October 2019, Emsisoft published a free decryption program that can be used to restore FC files to their original state, provided users have access to at least one original, unencrypted file.

NOTE: Paradise may also rename files to use the .PARADISE, .2ksys19, .p3rf0rm4, .corp, or .stub extensions.

How to open an FC file

Because FC files are encrypted with ransomware, they cannot be opened. However, you can decrypt FC files to restore them to their original state.

To decrypt FC files, download the free Emsisoft Decryptor for Paradise utility. Then, open the decryptor, select the directory you want to decrypt, and decrypt your files. Repeat this process until you have decrypted all your files.

Warning

FileInfo.com recommends you never pay a ransom to decrypt files encrypted by ransomware. Paying a ransom encourages ransomware distributors to continue their efforts, and there is no guarantee that paying a ransom will give you access to your files. Instead, you should restore your data from a recent backup created before the ransomware infected your computer.
