What is a CVI file?
Image format used by Canvas, a technical illustration and graphics editing program; may contain both bitmap and vector graphics; sometimes used for saving proxy images, which reduces the screen redraw time for image intensive documents.
More Information
The Mac version of Canvas has been discontinued. However, CVI files may still be viewed in Canvas X, which was the last release of Canvas for Mac in 2005.

A CVI file may also be a map image created by CassiniVision, a French image-viewing program. CVI files commonly contain copies of historical maps, such as those from the Bibliothèque nationale de France's Gallica digital library.
How to open a CVI file
You can open a CVI file with CassiniVision (Windows). However, CassiniVision is discontinued. Thus, if you do not already have access to CassiniVision, you likely will not be able to open your CVI file.
