A CIS file may also be a data file used by the Chunkis mod, a storage-optimization tool for Minecraft: Java Edition on the Fabric modding platform. It stores world data in a proprietary Chunkis (CIS) format designed to reduce the amount of disk space required for saved worlds, effectively replacing .MCA files. Instead of saving every generated block in a world, Chunkis focuses on storing changes made to the world, which helps reduce the size of world save data.
More Information
Minecraft server administrators, modded Minecraft players, and developers interested in world storage optimization are most likely to encounter CIS files. CIS files generally appear alongside other files that make up a game world and are not useful outside the Chunkis ecosystem.
When the Chunkis mod saves a world, it converts chunk data into the CIS format and stores it for later use. The mod then reads the CIS files when the world is loaded, allowing the game to reconstruct the world while using less storage space than traditional save formats.
How to open a CIS file
You can open CIS files with Mojang Minecraft installations that have the Chunkis mod installed. Most users do not interact with the files directly, since the mod handles reading and writing them automatically. Advanced users may inspect CIS files with a hex editor or file analysis tool, but the contents are not designed for manual editing.
