A CAPX file may also be a musical score created by Capella, a music composition program. It contains Zip-compressed, XML data that describes a score's title, notes, rests, measures, pitches, tempos, and other elements. CAPX files sometimes also include a composer's comments about their score.
More Information
Capella is a Windows and Mac program that composers use to create, edit, play, and print musical scores. In Capella 7 and later versions, these scores are saved as CAPX files.
CAPX files are Zip-compressed archives that contain an XML file. The XML file, which is always named score.xml, contains the data Capella uses to show and play a score. The specific XML formatting that CAPX files use, known as CapXML, is proprietary to Capella. However, CapXML is similar to the standard MusicXML (.MXL) format. Therefore, many other music composition programs can open CAPX files.
NOTE: Capella scores were previously saved in the .CAP format.
How to open a CAPX file
You can open a CAPX file in Capella (Windows, Mac), Capella Reader (Windows, Mac), or Capella Score Reader (iOS, Android). Capella Reader and Score Reader are free programs that allow composers to view, play, and print the score a CAPX or CAP file contains.
