.BRSTM File Extension
What is a BRSTM file?
A BRSTM file is an audio file used by some Nintendo Wii and GameCube video games. It contains a sound effect or background music that is looped during gameplay. Video game enthusiasts sometimes extract BRSTM files from Wii and GameCube games and convert them to more common audio formats, so they can play the audio on their computers.
Many Nintendo video games include BRSTM files. Most notably, Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl use BRSTM format audio. These games' fans have created utilities that allow them to extract, play, and convert the audio that BRSTM files contain.
Gamers have also created tools that allow them to create their own BRSTM files. For example, Brawl Custom Song Maker can convert .WAV, .MP3, .OGG, and .FLAC audio files into BRSTM files, which savvy gamers can then import into their video games.
How do I open a BRSTM file?
You can open BRSTM files in BrawlBox (Windows), a free program that allows gamers to open and edit Nintendo game resources. BrawlBox allows you to convert BRSTM files to WAV files, which you can play in most media players.
You can also open BRSTM files in VideoLAN VLC media player (cross-platform). To do so, you may have to right-click the file and select Open with... → VLC media player, as VLC does not natively recognize the BRSTM format.
