Bidirectional OTDR Test Results

A BDR file may also be a bidirectional OTDR test results file used by EXFO fiber-optic testing equipment and software. It stores OTDR measurements taken from both ends of a fiber, with one trace representing the A→B direction and another representing the B→A direction. BDR files are saved in a proprietary EXFO format that combines two matching OTDR measurements into a single bidirectional result.

More Information

Fiber-optic technicians, installers, and network professionals use bidirectional OTDR testing to evaluate fiber links and more accurately measure the loss of individual events, such as splices. Measurements taken from both directions can reduce errors caused by differences in the fiber's backscatter characteristics when testing from only one direction. EXFO FastReporter combines the measurements and displays the resulting bidirectional trace and event information.

NOTE: EXFO FastReporter can create a BDR file by matching an A→B measurement with a B→A measurement and combining the two results. BDR files do not store multiple wavelengths in a single file; EXFO creates a separate BDR file for each wavelength.

How to open a BDR file

You can open BDR files with EXFO FastReporter and with OTDR Master, a browser-based OTDR viewer. OTDR Master can display the two traces.
