An AFR file is a segment file used by the Advanced Forensics Format (AFF), an open file format for storing forensic disk images. It contains a portion of a larger disk image created during a digital forensic investigation. When a forensic image is split into multiple files, each AFR file stores one segment of the image along with data needed to preserve the integrity of the original storage device.

AFR files work together with an accompanying .AFD file, which contains the primary segment of the image, and may also be accompanied by an .AFM file, which stores metadata, such as acquisition details and integrity information. Since each file is part of a standardized forensic imaging format, all related AFF files should be kept together so forensic software can reconstruct and analyze the complete disk image while preserving the integrity of the original digital evidence.
