H5P content packages are commonly used with learning management systems, such as Brightspace, Blackboard, Canvas, and Moodle. They are also compatible with systems like WordPress and Drupal through plugins.

What is the structure of an H5P file?

H5P files are simply renamed .ZIP files that store files and folders in a tree structure that typically includes the following components:

• h5p.json file - A .JSON file that stores a package definition, which includes metadata and library dependencies for the content package. Some mandatory fields in the JSON file are the title (package title), mainLibrary (main library for the content), language (standard language two-letter code), preloadedDependencies (libraries that need to be preloaded for the content to work), and embedTypes (possible embedding methods).
• content folder - A folder that contains the multimedia files that make up the content, along with the content.json file, which stores the parameters required to start the content.
• One or more code libraries - These are required for the content to run and each library must include a library.json file that specifies the name, dependencies, and any other necessary metadata. If the library is specified as a runnable type of content, it must include a semantics.json file that describes the content structure.

You can upload an H5P file to various content management tools, such as Drupal, WordPress, Moodle, and Ilias, as long as the H5P plugin is installed. You can also view H5P packages on your desktop with the "h5p-standalone" program.

Since H5P files are Zip-compressed files, you can also open them with a compression utility, such as Microsoft File Explorer (Windows), Corel WinZip (Windows), RARLAB WinRAR (Windows), or Apple Archive Utility (macOS). You may need to rename the .h5p file extension to .zip in order to open it with the utility. Keep in mind that opening the files this way will not display the content the same way as it would if uploaded via one of the aforementioned web services.
