What is a CWS file?
A CWS file is a song file created by Songtrix, an application used to learn about and create music. It stores a song composition, which includes the song's style, notes, segments, credits, and structure. CWS files were replaced by .SNGX files with the release of Songtrix 4.
More Information
The CWS file allows you to protect your songs, disable copying and printing functions, block editing or saving capabilities, embed a link to your member profile on the ChordWizard network, and lock song credits. CWS files can also be uploaded to the ChordWizard network and shared with other members.
To create a CWS file, select File → Save Song or Save Song As....
NOTE: Songtrix is available in bronze, silver, and gold editions, which are geared towards beginner, intermediate, and advanced users.

A CWS file may also be a template created by ClarisWorks, an integrated office suite developed for classic Mac OS and Windows systems. It stores a preformatted layout and style for a .CWK document, such as a word processing document, spreadsheet, or drawing. CWS templates allow users to quickly create new documents with consistent formatting and design without starting from scratch, to help save time and ensure uniformity in recurring documents.
More Information
ClarisWorks, later rebranded as AppleWorks, combined several productivity tools—such as a word processor, spreadsheet editor, drawing tool, and database—in one program. Users could create CWS templates for any of these tools and reuse them across multiple projects. For example, a teacher might create a worksheet template as a CWS template, or a small business could develop a basic invoice layout as a CWS template.
How to open a CWS file
You can open CWS files with AppleWorks (or ClarisWorks for earlier versions before rebranding). However, both ClarisWorks and AppleWorks are discontinued.
