An RTP file is an update file used by earlier desktop versions of Intuit TurboTax, a tax preparation service. While TurboTax no longer uses RTP files, users of earlier software versions would install the latest updates to the program delivered via an RTP file without needing to download an entirely new version of TurboTax.

To ensure that the software stayed compliant with the latest tax regulations, earlier versions of TurboTax continually released updates to the desktop version of the software. The software downloaded the files automatically and applied them to the existing software installation to streamline the update process. However, users sometimes encountered RTP files when they initiated software updates or when TurboTax automatically updated itself.
