A CAUD file is an audio macro used by a Retro Studios video game, such as Donkey Kong Country Returns or Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. It contains instructions the game uses to play the sound effects and music stored in .CSMP (Cooked Audio Sample) files. CAUD files define in what order a related group of CSMP files play. They can also apply various effects to the CSMP files.
Each game's CAUD files contain a unique identifier that denotes with which game they are used. For example, Metroid Prime 3's CAUD files include the identifier CAUD 0x9, while Donkey Kong Country Returns's CAUD files include the identifier CAUD 0xE.
