What is a CAUD file?
A CAUD file is an audio macro used by a Retro Studios video game, such as Donkey Kong Country Returns or Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. It contains instructions the game uses to play the sound effects and music stored in .CSMP (Cooked Audio Sample) files. For example, a CAUD file may contain instructions for when a certain set of sound effects should loop.
More Information
Retro Studios is a Nintendo subsidiary known primarily for developing games in the Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country series. Many of these games use audio files saved in the CSMP format and accompanying CAUD files.
CAUD files define in what order a related group of CSMP files play. They can also apply various effects to the CSMP files.
Each game's CAUD files contain a unique identifier that denotes with which game they are used. For example, Metroid Prime 3's CAUD files include the identifier CAUD 0x9, while Donkey Kong Country Returns's CAUD files include the identifier CAUD 0xE.
How to open a CAUD file
CAUD files are not meant to be opened. Various Retro Studios games load and use CAUD files when players play them.
