Adobe Reader is a free program that allows users to view, search, and print PDF documents. Unlike the commercial version of Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Reader cannot be used to create or edit PDFs, except through a built-in feature that connects remotely to services and shares documents over the Internet. It is available as a standalone application as well as a Web browser plugin for viewing PDFs within Web browsers.

The Adobe Reader interface provides simple document reading and search capabilities. To navigate through a document, users may use the scroll bar, page up and page down arrows, or the hand tool to grab a page and scroll manually. They may also open the Pages or Bookmarks viewers and jump to any page within the document. The Pages viewer shows thumbnails for each document page, and the Bookmarks viewer displays the outline with links to each document section. For search capabilities, users are provided a keyword search box that finds matches within the document.

Adobe Reader implements restrictions on PDF files. Restrictions either allow or disallow permissions such as printing, content copying, page extraction, commenting, filling of form fields, and signing. Adobe Reader users are given permissions only if they have been set by the document creator. Adobe Reader also implements password protection for PDF files that require a password before viewing a document.

Adobe Reader is a very useful application for viewing PDF documents. It is available on over twenty platforms and in over twenty-five languages, and over 500 million copies have been distributed to date. Whether it is for personal or professional use, Adobe Reader is a great option for viewing all sorts of documents that have been published in PDF format.
