An OMF file is a project interchange file based on the Open Media Framework (OMF) standard. It is used to transfer audio, video, and timeline data between editing programs, such as video editors and digital audio workstations. Instead of storing a finished media file, it contains references to media along with information about how the project is arranged.

An audio project saved in the OMF format can store multiple audio tracks, volume and pan information, and references to audio files. However, not all settings, such as insertion effects and channel routing options, may be saved in an OMF file. Therefore, not all project and track settings may be transferred when opening an OMF file in another application.
OMF files are commonly used by media professionals who need to move projects between different software during production, such as from video editing to audio post-production. The format helps preserve edits, timing, and track layout across compatible applications.
UWAGA: While OMF was widely used in the past, it has largely been replaced by newer formats, such as .AAF, which offer better support and flexibility. However, some legacy workflows and applications still support OMF files for project exchange.
