Outside North America, the Sega Genesis was known as the Sega Mega Drive. Released in 1988, the Mega Drive was one of Sega's most popular video game consoles. Notably, the Mega Drive was the first Sega console to feature a game starring Sonic the Hedgehog.
Gamers who want to play classic Mega Drive games on their PCs can do so by downloading a Genesis emulator and using it to load a Mega Drive game ROM, which is a copy of a Mega Drive game. Many Mega Drive game ROMs are saved as SMD files. Some Mega Drive game ROMs are also saved as .GEN files, despite being copies of the Mega Drive version of a Genesis game.
