You can open GRF files with various programs, including Micrografx Graph Plus, GraphEdit, and Accelrys Insight II. However, these programs are no longer maintained.

You may be able to open GRF files with GraphStudioNext, since it is an open-source alternative to GraphEdit. However, it will likely only support GRF files created by GraphEdit.

Resource file used by the Transport Tycoon (TT) and Transport Tycoon Deluxe (TTD) railroad business simulation games; contains a collection of sprites, which store the 2D graphics for game objects; used for displaying and animating railroad vehicles, scenery, and other game objects.

The original version of GRF files supported simple sprites. However, the new open source variants of Transport Tycoon, including OpenTTD and TTDPatch, support new graphics data in GRF files. OpenTTD's new format, called NewGRF, can include data for vehicles, cargo, buildings, railroad types, and industries.

OpenTTD provides GRF game packages, which are downloadable NewGRF files that can be applied to the game to display custom graphics and to alter game properties.

A GRF file is a game data file used by a Minecraft: Legacy Console Edition game. It contains rules that Minecraft executes in a game world, to show messages and control how players and items spawn. Minecraft: Legacy Console Edition's tutorial and mini-game worlds use GRF files.

Minecraft: Legacy Console Edition is gamers' collective name for console versions of Minecraft developed by 4J Studios. These versions of Minecraft have been replaced by Minecraft Bedrock Edition.
