File used by StepMania, a dance and rhythm game that includes support for dance pads; included inside a .SMZIP file and contains information describing the package contents; used for installing songs, themes, and add-ons in StepMania.

CTL files are saved in a plain text format and are always named smzip.ctl.

A CTL file is a playable track used by Neognosis BallisticNG, a futuristic racing game. It contains the layout of a track in the plain text Custom Track Layout (CTL) format, which includes the track shape, floor and wall specifications, and speed modes. BallisticNG loads CTL files so players can race the tracks, but players may also edit them with the Layout Creator provided with the game.

BallisticNG is a high-speed, anti-gravity combat racing game similar to Jet Moto and Wipeout. It is also open source and encourages gamers to modify its elements. For example, the Layout Creator included with BallisticNG allows gamers to create and test track layouts.

You can open CTL files with the Layout Creator included with Neognosis BallisticNG. The BallisticNG also loads CTL files automatically, allowing players to race the tracks.

Since CTL files store text, you can open them with a text or source code editor, such as Microsoft Notepad, Apple TextEdit, or Microsoft Visual Studio Code. Remember that opening them with a text editor will appear different from with BallisticNG.
