What is a WTK file?
A WTK file is an OTDR trace file created by Wavetek MTS 5000 fiber-optic testing equipment. It stores measurements recorded by an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR), including the fiber trace, event table, and settings used to acquire the measurement. WTK is a proprietary Wavetek format that was used as a native alternative to the standardized .SOR format.
More Information
The MTS 5000 platform was used to test and troubleshoot fiber-optic cables and networks, with an OTDR sending light pulses through a fiber and measuring the returning light to determine the cable's length and condition. The resulting measurements can identify events such as connectors, splices, bends, and breaks, which fiber-optic technicians, installers, and network professionals could save and review in WTK files.
WTK files are associated with older Wavetek MTS 5000 equipment and may be encountered in archives of fiber-optic measurements, while the MTS 5000 product line later became associated with Acterna, JDSU, and VIAVI as the business changed ownership. WTK files are distinct from SOR files, which use the Bellcore/Telcordia OTDR format and have broader support in current OTDR software.
How to open a WTK file
You can open WTK files with VIAVI FiberCable 2 on Windows. You can also open WTK files with OTDR Master, a browser-based OTDR viewer that displays the trace, event table, and acquisition settings.
