A VPX file may also be a virtual pinball table created for Visual Pinball X (VPX), an open-source pinball simulator and table editor. It stores the main data needed to define and play a table, including the playfield layout, ramps, bumpers, flippers, lights, materials, textures, sounds, and scripting information that controls table behavior. Pinball hobbyists, table designers, cabinet builders, and preservation communities commonly use VPX files to create, customize, share, and play virtual pinball tables.

VPX files are saved in a structured binary format and can store many of a table's resources and settings in a single file, including the playfield layout, images, sounds, and scripts. However, some tables also rely on companion files, such as backglass data, ROMs, music, videos, or configuration files, which are stored separately in the table's folder.
NOTE: VPX files were introduced with the release of Visual Pinball 10, replacing .VPT files used by older Visual Pinball versions, such as 9.x.x and 8.x.x.
How to open a VPX file
You can open VPX files with Visual Pinball X. On Windows, the program includes both the table editor and player, allowing you to open, edit, and play VPX tables. Current cross-platform builds can also play VPX tables on macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and other supported platforms. If a table depends on companion files, keep them with the VPX file in the expected table folder so Visual Pinball X can load all of the table's features correctly.
