What is a TIMBER file?
A TIMBER file is a saved game or map used by Mechanistry Timberborn, a city-building video game. It is a .ZIP file that contains a .JSON file that describes the saved game or map. Players often share TIMBER files with each other online, to distribute custom game maps.
More Information
In Timberborn, players play as beavers constructing a steampunk city. The game is available for Windows and macOS.
Timberborn saves players' saved games and the game's game maps in TIMBER files. These files are ZIP packages that contain a JSON file. The JSON file describes either the saved game or game map in human-readable plain text that players can edit.
Saved game TIMBER files are stored in the following directory:
~/Documents/Timberborn/Saves
Map TIMBER files are stored in the following directory:
~/Documents/Timberborn/Maps
How to open a TIMBER file
You can open a TIMBER file with Timberborn (Windows, Mac). To do so, place the file in the correct Timberborn sub-directory (noted above). Then, either resume the saved game your TIMBER file contains, or select the map your TIMBER file contains while starting a new game or in Timberborn's map editor.
If you want to edit the JSON file a TIMBER file contains, first unzip the file using any Zip-decompression tool. Then, open and edit the JSON file in any text editor.
