What is a SETTINGCONTENT-MS file?

File created for the Windows 8.1 operating system; contains setting content for Windows functions, such as how updates are installed or what default apps should be used to open particular file types; contained content is written in XML language.

You can create a shortcut to the SETTINGCONTENT-MS file, which makes it easier to customize your settings:

  1. Right-click an empty space on your desktop and select New → Shortcut.
  2. Copy and paste the following text into the item location area bar and click Next:
    %windir%\explorer.exe %localappdata%\Packages\windows
    .immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\
    Indexed\Settings\en-US\AAA_SystemSettings_Update
    _ChangeSettings.settingcontent-ms
  3. Name your shortcut "Windows Update Settings" and click Finish.

NOTE: For the text in step 2, if you're using a different language than English you'll have to change en-US in the text. Also, this text is for a shortcut to Windows Update settings, consult the "Common Filenames" section below for other SETTINGCONTENT-MS files.
