What is an SCX file?

An SCX file is a form created by Microsoft Visual FoxPro, a database management application for Windows. It stores objects with their properties, events, and methods a user configures in the Form Designer included with FoxPro. SCX files are similar to .DBF database files in the sense that they are saved in a table format that stores data records.

More Information

Visual FoxPro is a database management program for Windows and Mac that features its own programming language to develop database solutions. Microsoft eventually dropped support for the Mac version of Visual FoxPro, then discontinued the software altogether in 2007.

In Visual FoxPro, you can design forms that other users will utilize to view and enter data into a database. Some form features include support for various types of objects, the ability to manipulate multiple forms together, and form generation from custom templates.

How to create an SCX file with Visual FoxPro

You can use the Form Designer included with Visual FoxPro to create a form and save it as an SCX file. To create an SCX file, select Forms and choose New in the Project Manager. Or, you can select File → New → Form → New File. After modifying the form, select File → Save to save it.

Visual FoxPro creates an SCX file to store the form data when you save the form. After saving the form, you can close it, then re-open the form to continue editing it.

How to open an SCX file

You can open an SCX file with Microsoft Visual FoxPro. However, Microsoft discontinued Visual FoxPro in 2007.

If you are unable to access Visual FoxPro, you can also change the .scx file extension to .dbf, then open it with software that supports .DBF Database files, such as Microsoft Access 365 or OpenOffice Base, to query its data.

You can also open an SCX file with a plain text or source code editor if you want to view its information. If you choose to view it this way the form will not appear the same as if you open it with Visual FoxPro.
