A PK2 file may also be a Zip-compressed game data file used by Quake II Evolved, a Quake II mod. It may contain custom in-game graphics, models, textures, sounds, or other game assets. Players use PK2 files to load custom content into Quake II Evolved.

More Information

Quake II was the 1997 sequel to id Software's Quake. Quake II Evolved is a Quake II mod that adds additional features to the game, including the ability to load custom game assets packaged as PK2 files.

The PK2 format is very similar to the .PK3 format used by Quake III engine games. As such, games that can load PK3 files can likely also load PK2 files (you may have to rename your PK2 file to use the .pk3 extension).

How to open a PK2 file

You can load the game assets a PK2 file contains in Quake II Evolved (Windows). To do so, place the PK2 file in the ~/quake2/baseq2 folder before launching Quake II Evolved.

If you want to extract the game assets a PK2 file contains, you can do so using 7-Zip (Windows), Apple Archive Utility (Mac), or any other Zip-decompression utility. You may have to first rename the file to use the .zip extension.
