An MDE file may also be a module created by the Education version of GRAPHISOFT Archicad architectural design software. It is the same as an Archicad Module .MOD file, but is only supported by the Education version of Archicad. The MDE format is no longer developed and is considered a legacy format.

More Information

Archicad is a building information modeling (BIM) application for designing and visualizing interiors, exteriors, landscapes, and whole structures. The software provides many helpful design tools, including modules that function as master templates you can "hotlink" or embed in projects.

The standard version of Archicad creates a MOD file to store a module. However, the Education version of Archicad creates an MDE file to store a module. The module formats are the same, but they use different file extensions.

How to open an MDE file

You can open an MDE file with the Education version of GRAPHISOFT Archicad in Windows and macOS. To open an MDE file, select File → Open and select the MDE file. You can also open an MDE file with the standard version of Archicad, but you may need to change the .mde file extension to .mod.
