What is an LRTEMPLATE file?
An LRTEMPLATE file is a settings file used by Adobe Lightroom, a digital photo editing and organizing application. It is saved in plain text and contains presets used for viewing and altering digital photos. LRTEMPLATE files include settings for color, white balance, tone, and effects, as well as other editing properties.
More Information
You will most likely only encounter an LRTEMPLATE file if you use Adobe Lightroom for editing photos. The files may be created by the user but they also come packaged with the application. LRTEMPLATE files are created when a user saves image-editing settings in order to re-use them with other photos.
You can find LRTEMPLATE files in the following locations:
- Windows - C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\[Preset or Template folder]
- macOS - /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/[Preset or Template folder]
LRTEMPLATE files are only supported by Lightroom 6 and earlier and Lightroom Classic prior to version 7.3. To open LRTEMPLATE files in these versions of Lightroom follow these instructions:
- Windows - Select Edit → Preferences..., click the "Presets" tab, click "Show Lightroom Presets Folder...", copy the LRTEMPLATE file into the folder, then click the "Restart Lightroom" button.
- macOS - Select Lightroom → Preferences..., click the "Presets" tab, click "Show Lightroom Presets Folder...", copy the LRTEMPLATE file into the folder, then click the "Restart Lightroom" button.
NOTE: LRTEMPLATE files were replaced by .XMP files with the release of Lightroom Classic CC v7.3 in April 2018. The XMP format allowed the templates to be compatible with other Adobe programs and synced via Adobe Cloud.
