What is an IMOVIETRAILER file?

An IMOVIETRAILER file stores a trailer created by the iOS version of Apple iMovie, a video-editing application. It may contain one or more video clips, titles, transitions, and settings. iMovie users save videos as IMOVIETRAILER files when creating Hollywood-style movie trailers from templates packaged with iMovie.

The iOS version of iMovie allows you to create various types of video projects and save them as .IMOVIEMOBILE files. However, if you create a trailer, the app saves it as an IMOVIETRAILER file.

To create an IMOVIETRAILER file with the iOS version of iMovie:

  1. Select Storyboard under "Start New Project."
  2. Choose Trailers.
  3. Select Create.
  4. Tap Done.

IMOVEITRAILER files are compressed with Zip-compression and store various files and folders, including:

  • An "Assets" folder that stores individual .MOV video clips that make up the trailer.
  • One or more .PLIST files that store settings, such as the trailer name, duration, and theme.
  • A "Micaches" folder that stores .PNG previews.
  • A "Movies" folder that stores the trailer MOV video.
