What is an HWAV file?
An HWAV file is an audio file used by 3hs, a homebrew replacement for the Nintendo 3DS hShop. It contains background music that can be played in 3hs. Primarily, gamers create HWAV files by converting .WAV files via an online conversion tool.

The Nintendo 3DS hShop was an online repository from which gamers could download 3DS games, DLC, apps, and other content. 3hs is a custom replacement for the now-closed hShop, which gamers can install on 3DSes that have been hacked to use custom firmware.
Optionally, 3hs users can choose to play background music in the app. To do so, they must convert one or more audio files to the HWAV format. Then, they must place those files in the following location on their 3DS SD card:
sd:/3ds/3hs/music
Usually, gamers use 3hs's online HWAV generator to convert WAV files to HWAV files. However, gamers can also use the 3hstool included with 3hs to convert other types of audio files to the HWAV format. HWAV files are similar to .BCWAV files, except that they can store additional tags and metadata in their file headers.
How to open an HWAV file
To use an HWAV file with 3hs, place it in the following directory on your Nintendo 3DS's SD card (after installing 3hs):
sd:/3ds/3hs/music
Then, you'll be able to play the file in 3hs, by selecting Music from the app's menu bar.
