What is a HAM file?
A HAM file is a game data file used by Interplay Productions Descent 2, a popular first-person shooter game in which players pilot a spaceship through underground mines. It contains data that controls, among other things, how the game's enemies, weapons, and other objects function. Most HAM files control behavior on a mission-specific basis. Descent2.ham controls behavior on a game-wide basis.
HAM files are stored inside HOG files, and they control how various objects, enemies, and weapons behave in-game. Descent 2 modders can use custom level creators to create their own HAM files, as well as .HXM files.

How to open a HAM file
HAM files are not meant to be opened or edited by players. While Descent 2 players have created utilities that can modify the game's HAM files, none of those utilities are currently available for download.

Compiled executable file created by the HAM Programmer Toolkit, a developer's tool used to create programs for the HAM runtime; may contain program executable code as well as bundled application resources; used for creating simple programs.
A HAM file contains packaged code in a plain text format that can be read and executed by the HAM Runtime application. Some HAM files require a specific version of HAM Runtime to run properly, though most will run in any version.
