What is a GIO file?

A GIO file is a musical score written in the Adagio score language and supported by the Mandriva Nyquist score composition software. It contains the sheet music for a musical composition and includes MIDI data, instruments, notes, the composer and title, and other score information.

More Information

Mandriva Nyquist is a discontinued score composition application for the also-discontinued Mandriva Linux distribution. When saving a score with Nyquist, the app creates a GIO file to store its contents. After saving the musical score, you can close it, then re-open it to continue modifying the score.

The Adagio score language saved in GIO files consists of text commands that specify each note in the score, with each note consisting of one or several of the following attributes:

  • Time
  • Pitch
  • Loudness
  • Duration
  • Articulation
  • Voice number
  • Tempo
  • Rate

How to open a GIO file

You can open a GIO file with Mandriva Nyquist. However, the software is discontinued.

Since GIO files store information in plain text, you can also view and edit the score with a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad (Windows) or Apple TextEdit (Mac).

A GIO file may also be a musical score created by Mandriva Nyquist, a discontinued software package associated with the Mandriva Linux distribution that provided audio creation and manipulation capabilities. It contains a script written in the Nyquist language, which defines musical elements such as notes, timing, and timbre, and it provides instructions the Nyquist interpreter reads to generate the sounds.

More Information

Roger Dannenberg at Carnegie Mellon University developed the Nyquist language in the 1990s. The language is a Lisp-based programming language designed for audio processing. Mandriva, a Linux distribution, included Nyquist as part of its set of tools for audio enthusiasts, musicians, and sound designers looking to create complex sounds and compositions.

As Nyquist users created musical scores, they saved them as GIO files, which they could also play back. Since Nyquist is discontinued, GIO files are now obscure.

How to open a GIO file

You can open GIO files with Mandriva Nyquist. However, the software package is no longer developed.
