What is an AVCI file?

An AVCI file is an image saved in the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) binary container format, which uses H.264, also known as Advanced Video Coding (AVC), to compress the image data. AVCI files may also include related metadata.

More Information

The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) develops the HEIF container format, which can use different compression technologies. For example, .HEIC files typically contain HEVC-compressed images, while Apple designated the .avci file extension to identify HEIF images compressed with H.264. Developers and software that work with HEIF media can use AVCI files when an application or workflow supports H.264-compressed images within a HEIF container.

How to open an AVCI file

You can open AVCI files with image applications that use the open-source libheif library, as long as the library supports H.264/AVC-encoded HEIF images. For example, GIMP may be able to open AVCI files if its underlying libheif library supports the AVCI variant. If GIMP does not recognize the .avci extension, renaming the file to .heif may allow the program to identify it as a HEIF image.
