What is a AIIGNORE file?
An AIIGNORE file is a configuration file JetBrains AI Assistant uses to restrict which files and folders an AI feature can process. It lets developers specify files or folders that contain sensitive, private, or otherwise restricted information so AI Assistant does not use their contents when gathering project context. Users typically place AIIGNORE files in the root folder of a project.

AIIGNORE files are saved as plain-text files and use the same pattern syntax as .GITIGNORE files. Developers can list individual files, folders, file types, or other patterns to exclude them from AI Assistant processing.
For example, a project can use an AIIGNORE file to exclude log files, build output, configuration files, or other project data from AI processing. JetBrains' Junie coding agent also respects AIIGNORE files when processing project files. JetBrains also supports a related .NOAI file, which disables AI Assistant for an entire project rather than excluding only selected files and folders.
How to open a AIIGNORE file
AIIGNORE files are not meant to be opened. JetBrains IDEs reference the file automatically. However, you can open AIIGNORE files with any text editor, including the built-in editor in a JetBrains IDE. You can also create and edit the file directly from the AI Assistant project settings.
