What is an 8PWD file?
An 8PWD file is a password vault backup created by 8PWD, a password management application developed by MNV LIMITED. It stores information saved in a user's vault, including account names, usernames, passwords, two-factor authentication secrets, passkeys, Wi-Fi credentials, payment cards, personal identities, and notes. Users can export 8PWD files to back up their information or transfer it between supported devices.
More Information
The 8PWD format stores data as XML encoded in UTF-8 when the backup is unencrypted. The XML organizes the vault's folders, accounts, and other saved information into named fields.
Users can also protect a backup with a separate password. In that case, 8PWD encrypts the XML data using AES-256-GCM, with a key derived from the backup password. Encrypted backups use a binary format, and backups containing passkeys are always encrypted.
How to open an 8PWD file
You can open 8PWD files with the 8PWD application or use the application's backup import feature. If the backup is encrypted, enter the password used to protect it.
You can also open unencrypted 8PWD files with a text editor because they contain XML, although doing so may expose private information. The Python script provided on the official 8PWD format specification page can also validate a backup or decrypt an encrypted one; decrypting requires the correct password and the script's optional cryptography dependency.
